Where to start? 2015 is already stacked!

To begin with, the label is no longer based in Portland. It’s now officially a Corvallis label. Where is Corvallis? About 1.5 hrs south of Portland. Why Corvallis? Because it’s the area where I grew up. Portland is a great town with a lot of opportunities, but home is where the heart is …
I still plan on heavily supporting Portland-based punk and metal, so stay tuned for some exciting announcements involving such acts in the upcoming months. Also, I don’t know how to replace the tag line on this page from “Portland” to “Corvallis” … so, uh, yeah. RELEASE UPDATES:

1. The PAGERIPPER 12″ EP has finally been pressed and is shipping this week! After they get here, I’ve got to get ’em screened on the B-side, which will probably take another week. After that, pre-orders will be shipping. The band should have them in time for a record release show they’re playing with another great Portland band who is also releasing an excellent new record (DIVERS) on February 15th (http://www.facebook.com/events/384204171756322/)! You can still pre-order the EP here: http://1859records.bandcamp.com/album/pageripper-bruce-jams-vol-iii-12-inch-ep

2. The NO///SE LP has been pushed back a couple of weeks, unfortunately. It’s likely going to press in early February. Kind of a bummer, but it will be worth the wait. The jackets are in and they look great (heavyweight, matte-finished). There are still copies available on translucent blue, although they’re selling steadily. Don’t snooze! You can still pre-order here: http://1859records.bandcamp.com/album/o-s-lower-berth-12-inch-lp

… also, check out the bonus chip-tune version of “Buried Alive” and their excellent version of Tom Wait’s “Dirt In The Ground”! Included with the digital-download only, not on the vinyl.3. Tests have been approved for the VUKARI 12″ EP (and the heavyweight, matte-finished jackets/inserts have arrived) + the BLACKBIRD RAUM Swidden double LP, but they likely won’t be going to press until April. Stay tuned for pre-orders!

4. The first round of the SIEGE FIRE LP tests were rejected, unfortunately. This will delay the project a bit, but that just gives singer Mike Roberts more time to wrap up the stunning gatefold art he’s been working on. Really excited about that!

5. Lacquers have been cut and sent to the plant for the STRANGEWEATHER + SÓL releases. If you haven’t heard these excellent Portland doom bands, you’re in for a treat. Both will be touring heavily in 2015. You can listen to the entire LP or purchase the tape version here (the LP will have different art + also be remastered, both for vinyl and digital): http://deathculturetapes.bandcamp.com/album/s-l-black-mountain

6. Ever heard of the German post-punk/darkwave PINK TURNS BLUE? I don’t think enough people these days have. In 1987, they released an excellent debut LP called If Two Worlds Kiss and it’s almost impossible to find without paying $100 for. Thankfully, the band has generously allowed 1859 to remaster & repress it in 2015! Look for multiple color variations (red, pink, blue, black). Likely a late summer/early fall release. Super excited about this one. Check out the album via YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qf3wC9qLMg

7. The WRETCHED OF THE EARTH LP is out & selling pretty well. Still have copies on red, really happy with how that record turned out. You can order a copy here: http://1859records.bandcamp.com/album/wretched-of-the-earth-fire-to-their-houses-12-inch-l p

8. The VICIOUS PLEASURES 7″ EP got an excellent review in Maximumrocknroll. Green copies still available! Order here: http://1859records.bandcamp.com/album/vicious-pleasures-s-t-7-inch-ep

9. The BLACKBIRD RAUM Under The Starling Host LP continues to sell well. Still have a few copies left on white; purple is sold out (although I have maybe 5 warped copies I might put up for sale at a discounted price [they play fine]). Don’t snooze! Order here: https://1859records.bandcamp.com/album/blackbird-raum-under-the-starling-host-12-inch-lp

10. Please, please check the GRAND COLLAPSE LP out. Awesome melodic thrash. The band rules, they play in Europe constantly, the singer is the son of Stig/Icons of Filth, and more people should be listening to them. Seriously! ET CETERA:

* There’s a free 1859 sampler available for download here (including unreleased tracks from THE SIEGE FIRE + STRANGEWEATHER) : http://1859records.bandcamp.com/album/1859-sampler-1

* I currently have 1859 releases stocked in the following Portland record stores: Blackwater, Green Noise, Mississippi, and 2nd Ave

* One my priorities in 2015 is increased distribution (Ebullition, at the very least). If you, or anyone you know of, is interested in wholesale, please let me know and I can send you my list with prices. Thanks!
* SÓL has booked time @ Type Foundry Studios in Portland this October to record a new LP for 1859 with the mighty Billy Anderson! That should sound amazing.* There are releases in 2015 planned for WOLVHAMMER, among others … stay tuned for more details!
Also, while I wanna acknowledge that doing a vinyl label in 2015 can be challenging, I really do appreciate the support. I’m excited about all the bands I help release music for, and I know they appreciate your support, as well.Okay, I think that’s it. For now, at least.

Thank you!

Short December update …

December 6, 20141859records1859 Records, atmospheric black metal, black metal, Blackbird Raum, crust, Lynched, Pageripper, Portland, post-metal, punk Leave a comment

It’s been a while, and things have been slow going, but here’s an 1859 update:

1. The process for the Blackbird Raum LP, Under The Starling Host, has truly been a nightmare. It went to press at the end of October (!), sat around in the warehouse for over a week before shipping to a WRONG address — in Canada! — and then shipped finally to me in Oregon from California. At least, the color vinyl did. The black vinyl is still stuck in customs! To make matters worse, half of the color vinyl is WARPED. There were just enough good copies to send for pre-orders, but I’ll be returning the rest to the plant. Ugh. I’m hoping the black vinyl is in good shape, but at this point I’m doubtful. Again, it’s been a nightmare, but I appreciate everyone’s patience with me. Stay tuned for additional updates about a possible new pressing (fingers crossed) at the plant’s expense.

Update to the update:

I’m an idiot. A few copies appear warped and I’ll refrain from selling those. After a spot check on some that I thought were affected, they sound and spin fine. False alarm. No repress.

Can you tell I’m new at this?

2. There’s good news about the Wretched of the Earth LP — it’s finally pressed! I’m waiting to hear about shipment on that project. It’s from the same pressing plant as the above mentioned record, but I’m optimistic the vinyl will be getting here in time for the band’s record release show on Dec. 20th in Portland. To all the people who have pre-ordered, THANK YOU for your support and continued patience!

3. The No///Se LP is on track for a January release. Stay tuned for a preview track!

4. You can now pre-order, download, stream, whatever the excellent Pageripper 12″ EP; it was an exclusive Punknews stream, but now it’s on the 1859 Bandcamp …

https://1859records.bandcamp.com/album/pageripper-bruce-jams-vol-iii-12-inch-ep

5. The Siege Fire LP is at the plant currently and slated for a February release. I’ve been getting updates from the artist and the gatefold jacket is going to be very, very impressive.

6. The Blackbird Raum double LP version of their classic Swidden album is on track for a February release; 500 will be pressed, with 100 of those on translucent blue vinyl. Jackets will be through Stumptown, in Portland, and be similar to the CD version. Pretty excited about that!

7. The debut vinyl release from Chicago’s excellent post-metal/atmospheric black metal quartet, Vukari, is on track for a January release. The initial pressing will be limited to 300 copies on 180 gram black vinyl. It’s an excellent EP, really looking forward to seeing how it turns out on the vinyl format.

Anyhow, as you can see, lots of things in the works still. That’s not even including 2015 releases from Lynched (Ireland), Strangeweather (Portland), Sol (Portland), Dark Circles (Montreal), and possibly (hopefully) others!

If wearing label shirts is your thing, 1859 now has one for sale for purchase here:

Also, please be sure to follow 1859 on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook!

As always, anything purchased from the webstore goes directly back into the label and is greatly appreciated. Consider it a donation to the continuation of DIY punk/metal releases. Cheers for the support!

Hello! I’m not super savvy with website stuff, but I’ll be using this page to post updates on upcoming releases and other tidbits of news related to 1859 Records. Feel free to subscribe or whatever.

I do want to say that I appreciate everyone’s patience with the long periods of time between pre-orders and the actual vinyl pressing. My old policy was to put up a pre-order page as soon as I approved a test pressing, but everything is taking longer than it used to, due to resurgence in popularity of the vinyl format. From now on, I’m planning on posting pre-orders the same month that the vinyl is expected to be released. That way, you don’t have to wait so long between ordering and getting the vinyl in your sweaty hands … and I don’t have to feel bad every time I have to respond to an inquiry about whether or not I forget about an order! Everybody wins.

Upcoming releases in the next 2-3 months:

VPcover
* 1859-15 – VICIOUS PLEASURES 7″ – co-release w/ Different Kitchen Records (UK) (300 copies – 100 black/100 translucent blue/100 translucent green + 4 test pressings) – 4 brand-new frantic tracks from this high-energy Portland punk outfit recorded by Stan Wright @ Buzz or Howl (Arctic Flowers)!  Steeped in the gloom of the Pacific Northwest, Vicious Pleasures play a dark & catchy and blend of Crass and Wipers influenced punk rock. Sara’s tuneful singing interplays nicely with Lisa’s hooky guitar riffs, backed by the solid performance of the rhythm section. The vinyl is in, the jackets are almost ready! Listen/pre-order here: http://1859records.bandcamp.com/album/vicious-pleasures-s-t-7-inch-ep

BRstarlingcover

* 1859-16 – BLACKBIRD RAUM Under The Starling Host 12″ LP (500 copies – 300 black/100 white/100 purple + 100 test pressings) – A classic album from this Santa Cruz-based anarcho folk/punk band coming soon on vinyl — exclusively from 1859 Records! New artwork by Joshum Hardy (www.joshum.net). Should be shipping by the end of October. Listen/pre-order here: http://1859records.bandcamp.com/album/blackbird-raum-under-the-starling-host-12-inch-lp

WOTEcover
* 1859-17 – WRETCHED OF THE EARTH Fire To Their Houses 12″ LP (300 copies – 200 black/100 translucent red + 4 rejected test pressings + 4 approved test pressings; heavy-duty paper folder jackets w/ bronze ink + large photocopied booklet) – Dynamic mix of Portland crust and Iron Maiden-style riffage. Catchy, political music from a band composed of ex-A//Political + Squalora members. There have unfortunately been delays with this project, due to rejected test pressings, but it’s scheduled to be out by the end of November. Listen/pre-order here: http://1859records.bandcamp.com/album/wretched-of-the-earth-fire-to-their-houses-12-inch-lp

PRcover
* 1859-18 – PAGERIPPER Bruce Jams, Vol III one-sided 12″ EP  – co-release w/ Different Kitchen Records (UK) (300 copies – 100 black/100 opaque orange [USA]/100 coke-bottle clear [UK] + 4 test pressings) – Gritty and gruff punk from this prolific Portland trio. Somewhere between pop-punk and hardcore? It’s hard to pinpoint, but suffice to say, these 7 songs are really good. Should be out in November, stay tuned for a pre-order. In the meantime, check out their excellent debut 7″ here: http://pageripper.bandcamp.com/album/s-t-7

* 1859-19 – NO///SE Lower Berth 12″ LP – co-release w/ Man-In-Decline Records (USA) (500 copies – 300 black/100 translucent blue [1859]/100 another color [MID] + 4 test pressings) – Surf meets punk meets garage meets hardcore? It’s hard to say, but this band definitely doesn’t pull any punches. Hard-hitting, melodic, pissed, and catchy as hell punk from the Bay Area/Portland. Awesome stuff! This is their second full-length. Ex-Glass & Ashes, Young Livers, Youth Brigade, Stop Breathing, blah blah blah. Check out their previous 7″ on 1859/Different Kitchen here: http://1859records.bandcamp.com/album/o-s-beach-bathroom-bingo-b-w-all-the-little-things-you-love-to-hate-7-inch

On the dark horizon:

* 1859-20 –DARK CIRCLES MMXIV 12″ LP – multi-label (500 copies) – Brutal, depressing blackened crust from Montreal. Not unlike Tragedy, HHIG, From Ashes Rises, et cetera. Intense!

* 1859-21 – THE SIEGE FIRE Dead Refuge 12″ LP (300 copies – 200 black/100 color; gatefold jacket) – Another dose of that dark, yet melodic, crust that brings to mind later HHIG … this time straight out of Portland.

* 1859-22 – SOL Black Mountain 12″ LP (300 copies – 200 black/100 white) – Excellent debut from this Portland-based ambient post-metal outfit. Incredible vocals that bring to mind Neurosis, with catchy, heavy parts throughout textured soundscapes. Listen here: http://deathculturetapes.bandcamp.com/album/s-l-black-mountain

* 1859-23 – VUKARI En To Pan 12″ EP (300 copies – 200 black/100 colors) – A bit of a departure for 1859, this Chicago bands plays an excellent blend of atmospheric black metal/post-metal. Dynamic, interesting music that brings to mind Agalloch, among others. Listen here: http://vukari.bandcamp.com/

* 1859-24 – BLACKBIRD RAUM Swidden double 12″ LP (500 copies) – Another classic album of theirs on vinyl! Should be out sometime in April.

* 1859-25 – ABOLITIONIST Pathogen 12″ LP (pressing TBD) – More melodic, thematic punk from this Portland band. The album will follow two squatter crusty punks as they make their way across Portland in the aftermath of an airborne plague. Listen to older stuff here: http://abolitionist.bandcamp.com
